About Us

We welcome those new to Reiki, as well as practitioners trained in in lineages linked to Takata, who want to deepen their understanding of traditional Japanese Reiki perspectives and techniques.  We offer diversity in Usui Reiki Ryoho training.   To those most interested in a personal spiritual practice of Usui Reiki Ryoho, we offer rich meditations and work to build techniques native to the Japanese energy system- grounded in the hara. This approach incorporates many of the training tools Mikao Usui likely used to evolve and grow his own personal and divine consciousness.   Jikiden Reiki, linked directly to the work of Chujiro Hayashi brings practices focused on the treatment models of Usui and Hayashi. Classical Reiki Pennsylvania uses Japanese terminology to describe the techniques common in Mikao Usui’s time.

What is Usui Reiki Ryoho?

Mikao Usui founder of Reiki, 1865-1926

This is a system of Reiki that reflects – as closely as possible – the manner in which Usui Sensei (the founder) practiced Reiki himself.  The term “Classical” is used to acknowledge this traditional approach towards learning the system.  To best understand the distinctions between traditional Japanese Reiki and its Western counterparts, it is helpful to understand that modern or western Reiki predominately emphasizes hands on healing and the Indian chakra energetic system.  Western Reiki lineage teachers are descended from Hawayo Takata and Chujiro Hayashi.  While every Reiki course is different – even among practitioners of the same lineage – it is our goal to remain as true to the original vision of Usui Sensei and to the system Chujiro Hayashi developed for his clinic in Tokyo.  All of our teachers originally were taught in Western Reiki lineages.

If you are interested in a Reiki practice grounded in the rich heritage of Japan and traditional practices then Usui Reiki Ryoho is for you. We emphasize the roots of  Mikao Usui in Shinto, Zen & Pure Land Buddhist practices. Though a member of the International Jikiden Reiki Membership Organization of the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Kyoto, we have studied with many different teachers and traditions.

Start your day and end it as Mikao Usui did with chanting the Gokai, Five Principles.  Listen Here.

Jikiden Reiki is tied to Chiyoko Yamaguchi who learned Reiki in 1938  at the age of 17. She practiced Reiki in Japan for more than 60 years as first aid and addressed challenging health conditions. In 1965, she worked with her son, Tadao Yamaguchi and created Jikiden Reiki seminars in Kyoto.  During the course you are shown family documents and photographs of Chiyoko Yamaguchi with Hayashi sensei at her seminars to authenticate the rich Reiki tradtion among the Yamaguchis. While Usui sensei’s and Hayashi sensei’s handbooks offer hand positions for beginners, each taught students to track or monitor “byosen” as confirmed by Mrs. K Koyama, the previous president of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Tokyo. Detailed accounts of the Jikiden experience are found in Tadao Yamaguchi’s book LIGHT ON THE ORIGINS OF REIKI and Frank Arjava Petter’s book, THIS IS REIKI. Currently we are teaching only Shoden in the Jikiden Reiki tradition, but expect that over the next year, Okuden will be added to the offerings.

Classical Reiki Pennsylvania has partnered with Judith Pennington to explore the brainwaves of practitioners and clients in traditional Japanese Reiki treatments.  Judith has begun brainwave biofeedback research using the Mind Mirror EEG systems with other Reiki practitioner/teachers including Frans Stiene and Heather Alexander of the International House of Reiki during traditional Japanese treatments. We have also collected data on Reiki practitioners in the Lehigh Valley to assist in developing programming for the Lehigh Valley.
